Chemical Plant Protection

With the Mississippi River at its door step, Geismar Louisiana is well positioned for petrochemical facility supply chain, operations and commercial logistics. The area continues to see tremendous growth with over $20 billion in spending announced in the last few years for the Mississippi Corridor. On the request of current and potential new customers, Industrial Emergency Services opened the Geismar Fire Station in early 2015 to support customers in the area along the Mississippi Corridor. Numerous plants rely on IES to provide supplemental emergency response to augment their site-based emergency response programs. Whether providing only an incipient response or full…

Guard Duty … IES Protects Industrial Facilities During Downtime

Petrochemical Fire Suppression Standby Today’s insurance and regulatory requirements will not allow facilities to suspend fire protection capabilities due to turnaround or loss of suppression systems due to repair or installation. Temporary fire protection solutions must be in place when considering a renovation, maintenance or turnaround project. IES was recently contracted by a Marine Terminal Operator in California to provide fire protection support during dock maintenance, which would interrupt its firewater system for several months.  IES deployed portable firewater pumps and ground monitors along with dry chemical wheeled units to support the facilities throughout their outage. In another instance, IES…

RESPONSE SPOTLIGHT: Refinery Process Fire Response

Overview On Friday September 4th, IES was alerted about a process fire in a SEMC[1] client refining site. Upon arrival IES found four separate fires around a flange and instrumentation lines located in the process structure approximately 15 ft. above ground. Consultation with process operators onsite informed IES Responders that the product involved was hydrogen, the source lines had been isolated and those line pressures were dropping. Fortunately, operators had immediately deployed fixed monitors located around the unit as trained by IES in a recent fire response class, while a neighboring facility attempted to provide support by directing some of…

Pipeline Emergency Pre-Planning

With numerous pipelines crossing the United States, consideration for the management of fire-related emergencies is often overlooked at unmanned remote sites. In the past, these fires were often allowed to burn themselves out once the product had been secured. This practice is costly and can potentially escalate the public sector threat and environmental impact. In addition, today’s environmental awareness and regulatory environment makes this practice unacceptable. Given the resources available for today’s safety and emergency organizations, pipeline operators should AND CAN develop an effective emergency response plan for these remote / unmanned sites that addresses regional assets, logistics, mutual aid…

Project Spotlight: Auto Manufacturing, In Plant Safety & Response Program

Prevention, Preparation and Response Industrial Emergency Services (IES) offers Fire, Medical, HazMat and Technical Rescue services to High-Risk / High-Value business sectors throughout the United States. These critical services are offered in three ways: CORE (Ad Hoc) Facilities faced with an unexpected event may call on IES for ad hoc critical emergency response services application while under duress. Even if planned for, industrial-scale incidents can outpace pre-planned calculations or assumptions. In the absence or loss of primary localized response options, IES can quickly mobilize to either backfill depleted resources or to drop in a team of skilled IC and Response…
